The Rest Poem by Alex Lane

The Rest

If you really think about it
I don't see how
I'm supposed to do
what you ask of me now
it's just too hard to let go
From town I took the high road
while I watched to take the low

You've got to treat it like it's your final sitting
He could come for anyone these days
how long have I been awake?
I've waited for an end that's fitting
as I walked stretches of highway
how long have I been awake?
If I really think about it
It's not the last mistake
that I think I'll ever really make
how long have I been awake?
