The Silver Butterfly Poem by Aminath Neena

The Silver Butterfly

Rating: 4.5

Do you still remember
That silver butterfly with wings of cheese blue
The one you chased all spring with a stick
Full of breadfruit sap, as glue

I can still recall your surprise
When I had it in my fist
And gave it to you gently
And wiped my hands of its powdery dust
Though I never told you how I got it
I will do so dear, as this year's 'New Year gift'
When we celebrate twenty two years of love and trust

Well dear, it so happened
That while I sat day dreaming
Under the guava tree counting the petals
Of daisies, one for love and one for love not
That butterfly came and sat on my ringlets
Right down my cheek it was moving
For a while it tickled as I ignored
When it sat on my ring finger
I saw it clearly
And knew instantly
Why you yearned for it so much
It really was as sweet as chocolate fudge
So, without so much of a hesitation
I caught it in my hand and gave it to you so
Though it fluttered its wings in frustration
I only had a little of its dust and no more

But then I still wonder today, ma cherie
Whether, then I did the right thing
Because it seems that it was only a passing fling
As you have found your "mon cheri"

And I wonder where that butterfly is now
Perhaps roaming just like me… high up above?
