The Survival Of Our Species Poem by Francis Duggan

The Survival Of Our Species

From the smallest insect to the largest mammal the need is to survive
The survival of their species is part of their sexual drive
'Tis only to defend their breeding territories that male birds ever sing
And not what some like to believe as their sense of joy of Spring.

All creatures of the World that crawl, swim, walk, run or fly
The survival of their species is the only reason why
Males go to war for a female the strongest get the chance to multiply
Their genes through their offspring are they that different to you and I?

The survival of our species is part of our existence many their genes do pass on
And their bloodlines will live in their descendants though to the reaper they have long gone
Perhaps 'tis a form of self love to give birth to or to father a child
Us humans are not very different to creatures that live in the wild.

From the smallest insect to the largest mammal no matter how big or how small
They all do have one thing in common the need to survive is in them all
the lust that their genes should outlive them are we any different to they?
The survival of our species is part of our existence that's life some have been known to say.
