The Survivor Poem by Sara Militello

The Survivor

The Survivor

And then there's the survivor,
That heroic soul who manages to prevail
through every sleazy self-made con-trail
brought upon all by our hero's own petard.

Their ever unthinking schemes and things
tend to fling caution to every directional wind
while most of the flack falls on relations
like family and other unlucky congregations.

When the uninvolved speak in somber tones
later meant to carry support for the heroic ones,
most fail to see that the most painfully damaged
spend a lifetime outliving the inflicted carnage.

'She's such a wonderful survivor', all intone
As comments are made all around in tune
with the rhythm of the latest celebration
of a recently gathered congregation.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Sara Militello 28 October 2015

It's about carelessness. The carefree behavior of so many who fail to realize how their actions leave others psychically damaged. Like a child might be by the thoughtless acts by a parent or parents, or friend who then go on their merry way creating one crisis after the other in their uninhibited way throughout their thoughtless lives. Later, they can be admired for having survived such an interesting, eventful life...of mostly self-created, thoughtless events that leave others either dead, maimed, or psychically damaged.
