The Vagrant-Winter Poem by Loke Kok yee

The Vagrant-Winter

Rating: 5.0

Shivering o'er a fire with others of his kind
Looking through the faces, his life's story came to mind
A little boy in tatters; a young man by his side
A middle-aged in crutches, then he; the ebbing tide
He rubbed his trembling hands as a frigid breeze came by
He felt his time was nigh, but he had no tears left to cry

He saw the shore awaiting, but nowhere could he land
In the far horizon, he perceived a fairyland
But a gust of icy wind; brought him back to winter's hand

Laboriously he blundered through the unyielding snow
At the end of his tether, now fear began to show
He saw a bridge appearing, to shield him from his plight
Wearily he crept within, to pass the hostile night
Oblivious to the sewage, he waited for the morn
Then sank into a deep sleep; forsaken and forlorn

The bleak midwinter's cold, endlessly haunted the air
Then snow started falling but he was no longer aware
When morn brought a tepid sun; his footprints were no more there

A great poem, reminds me of Longfellow's The Slave's Dream.

This is a poem that grips you with an aching heart. How one shudders! To think even to be left alone in icy winter, sends a chill through the spine. A poem that showcases the truthful tragedy of cold winter, added to it with poverty and loneliness. To quote: Then snow started falling but he was no longer aware When morn brought a tepid sun; his footprints were no more there A powerful poem, Loke! Full Marks! 10+++

Another gripping write. When many stay in heated houses in winter and air conditioned homes in summer, some are thrown to the streets with no place to call a home of their own...! The young ones may somehow survive the cold blasts of winter. But for the aged, it is intimidating and many succumb to the cruel bite of winter. Here the poor man got deleted from the scroll of life, unnoticed and unattended by anyone. So tragic! A sure 10

Thank you Valsa, this series on The Vagrant had me mentally drained and I was quite happy to finish it off. That Blackbeard write was the antidote and I will have it out tonight. Thanks again for taking time off your tight schedule to read.
