The Woman Who Lived Inside Her Head Poem by Cecelia GrantPeters

The Woman Who Lived Inside Her Head

There was a woman who lived inside her head
She spoke daily to the people
Who lived inside her head.
Outside her head.....the world continued
Outside her head.....the band played on
Outside her head.....the parties were in full swing.

There was a woman who lived inside her head
A passerby approached her and he said;
"Aren't you the woman who lives inside her head? "
She charged the wise old LADY who
Told her stories of her life before
She occupied the space inside her head.
She loved the MAN who hugged her..... inside her head
He regularly held her hand and esteemed her,
But only for a short time.....she said
For he was the MAN who encouraged
The woman who lived inside her head.

There was a woman who lived inside her head
Outside her head the people went along with their business
Outside her head NURSES charged about, and DOCTORS prodded,
ORDERLIES were disorderly.....and then the woman
Retreated back inside her head.

Meanwhile on the outside life continued
But.... at a slower pace,
The moon shone....but brighter
The seas rose, kingdoms rose and fell.....and wars raged,
But still the woman continued to live inside her head.
The people on the OUTSIDE told her she was "Mad" and "Bad" and even "Dead"
But "NO" she said, "I am NOT MAD or BAD or even DEAD.....
I simply choose to live inside my head".

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I met a young woman in the Foyer at a local hospital. During our conversation she told me about the people who live 'inside' her head. One was a man who loved her and always paid her compliments, but only visited occasionally. The other was a wise old lady, who always gave her wise counsel, and one was a child about 8 years of age who was a boy and a girl. I told the woman I would write a poem about the people who lived inside her head, and she was pleased that I took time out of my day to acknowledge them. I read this in India recently and I read it in schools here in UK, and scholars and teachers find it intriguing.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Sometimes mental illness can be so unfairly misunderstood. How kind of you to acknowledge that what this woman believes is not wrong. I interpreted the poem correctly after reading but thank you for the added poet's note.
