To Duchess Poem by Andrea Valles Mata

To Duchess

Rating: 4.5

Duchess, she would sit and wait,
With senses primed to hear the gate,
The engine throb, the footstep dear,
To tell her that her love was near.

What joy erupted!
What explosion of love!
What flurry of fur and feet.
Tongue licking, tail flicking
All for her Love to greet.

Duchess was my teacher
Though learning she had none.
She taught me Patience, Peace and Gratitude
And a healthy dose of fun.

For years my angel stood by my side
Her heart beat just for me
Until one day, it burst with love
And set her spirit free.

There was one more lesson to be learnt you see,
The hardest one of all
Duchess had to leave me
To listen to God’s call.

There is another flailing soul
A life that needs her more
And so this final lesson we will learn
That love is letting go!
