Unesco Heritage Site Haiku - Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast Poem by john tiong chunghoo

Unesco Heritage Site Haiku - Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast

Grand-Bassam - we piece
together an old story
in black and white

Grand-Bassam
still haunting - a solid fiction
in black and white

Grand-Bassam
solid foundations
of a grim past

Grand-Bassam
intact - structures of
an old divide

Grand-Bassam
we try to be polite about
both black and white

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Grand-Bassam, the first capital of Ivory Coast, is an example of a late 19th- and early 20th-century colonial town, complete with separate quarters for Africans and Europeans and for commerce and administration, in addition to the historic N'zima African fishing village.

The city is home to numerous examples of colonial architecture and reflects the complex social relations that once existed between Europeans and Africans. - web
