Uprising Poem by Seamus O' Brian

Rating: 5.0

The ocean ends here,
but feels strongly otherwise.
Across cliffs stacked sternly
against her violent intentions
she thrashes arms sinewed
with the emerald curve of her depths
and braced with sleeves of white foam.

Her tempest is not frantic,
but unhurried, methodical,
as if each frothing blow of
her battering ram is a single tick
of a tectonic clock that has dispatched
aeons of kingdoms
into the increment of her shoals,
and she is willing to expend aeons more
on the amararinth tower of rock and
shadow opposing her now.

The looming cliffs lean toward her,
observe with unperturbed
countenance the incessant violence
assaulting their ankles below.
Columns of spray launch furiously
skyward, as a kinetic cloud of gulls
alternates between beating the air
above the armistice line,
and threading gentle arcs
of feathered white
into the shadows of burgundy aloft.

Far from the tempest,
a cool rivulet laps my feet,
and here the sea is calm,
but the moist sand beneath my toes
may have once been a mountain
or the keep of a mighty fortress.
In the receding line of the wavelet
the bubbling sand whispers a warning
not to mistake this momentary truce
for welcome
nor forget
the sea never surrenders.
