Vampire Eyes Poem by MaryLisa Russo

Vampire Eyes

They are new-
These vampire eyes of mine…
Smoky brilliance
Wrapped in a layer of crimson,
Sprinkled with stardust, moon powder and angst

You have a song to sing…
You beautiful, crumpled human mess
I want to hear it in whispered tones
Taste sound with my tongue
I want to know your backstory
Lost and grieving, morning glory

Ah…
A specialty of mine…
I catch the scent emanating
From your tired, frail body
The pulse beating at your neck
Filling my senses, awakening
Shadow and doubt
Hope and anticipation
The things that should stay buried
The things that should be dead

Close your mind
Put up those mental, brick walls
Do it in earnest
Do it in vain
Do it NOW
I am coming for you
Dear, defenceless human
But please-
Give me but a moment
To pick up this long, wayward white feather
And wipe a tear from my face…
A divine reminder
Of how I fell from eternal grace

And that is why I want to know
Your backstory
Lost and grieving, morning glory
The good and ultimately the bad
Just as you now know mine,
And then please
With the utmost grace…
Extend your vulnerable neck
So that my insatiable, vampire hunger….
Can quietly dine.
