We Are Ruled Poem by Francis Duggan

We Are Ruled

We are ruled by males with bulging egos who feel they are born to lead
Who trample upon others feelings in their great desire to succeed
They cannot be taken at their word the people so lacking in trust
Those who lust after power in a big way find it hard to be honourable and just.

When they talk of power to the people with their words they only do play
Since with their words they are so ambiguous they seldom do mean what they say
They do mean power to themselves only of power all others must fight for their share
When fortune does favour the ruthless then all in life is never fair.

We are ruled by arrogant people who seem to lack in empathy
To those by life treated quite harshly they don't offer much sympathy
Like the women and children who die hiding from bombs in Lebanon how come some must suffer such pain
And how come it's the poor who must suffer and how come it's the ruthless who gain?

In some strange way from the sufferings of the innocent it should never have to be this way
And yet for the success of the powerful the have nots are those made to pay
And we give our power to the arrogant when we vote on election day
Those who buy our votes with their promises but who never do mean what they say.
