What Has Happened Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

What Has Happened

What has happened to the adults?
The ones to remember that would admit,
Their making of mistakes.
And did not delay to hesitate,
Taking responsibility.
Without excuses heard,
To fake an innocence.

What has happened to all those values?
Once unquestioned or doubt,
Them to be firmly in place.
And rules and laws the majority followed.
But today the very ones,
Trusted to uphold them...
Are known with it shown the first to break.

What has happened to a civilization,
Becoming less civilized.
Respect to show and received from others,
Seem as ancient as dinosaurs.
Whose bones have long been fossilized.

What has happened to the minds of the people?
That will allow their own children,
To cuss, talk back!
And walk all over them.
As if this is progress.
As if this represents a future to expect.
As if this is not a sign,
Of an effective insanity...
No one is immuned from this to accept.
To have it,
Defended and protected...
As if,
This madness is envied...
As a quality of life enemies seek to threaten.

Who...
With eyes opened wide.
And snapped from being deeply hypnotized,
Would or could buy into this propaganda.
And be conscious enough to think,
There is just one train...
Full of sleeping passengers.
Unnoticing,
Not only are they distant...
From their anticipated destinations.
But they are also off track.
And have been like that for quite some time.

No one who has embraced clarity,
And awakened from delusions...
Would accept to believe and agree,
There is only one train off its track like that!
