Why I Write Poetry Poem by Sarah Shifflet

I've been told my poetry is like the ocean
My words flow and cause a commotion
people tell me I should be a professional poet
that my poems are too good for the world not to know it
They say I should get published one day
enough I say and I walk away
Poetry isn't a way to make a living I know
yet I keep writing because the words seem to just strike me like lightning.
With poetry I can say what I need to, because im free to, and without being judged.
And I'll tell you what, its nice
to get my feelings out through something I like.
I never even thought of becoming a poet
but here I am and these words show it.
So maybe I will be a published poet one day
who knows only time can say.
