World Hunger Poem by Daya Nandan

World Hunger

They are out there emaciated and starving for food,
They are malnourished and weak while we have it pretty good,
They are slowly becoming fretful, irritable, and voraciously hungry.
The hunger of marasmus consumes them, they easily become angry,

Lethal infections, circulation disorders and dehydration, the torture is just too much,
And yet here we are so ungrateful, we are losing the human touch,
They suffer each day watching their body waste away,
Fighting the perils of hunger, slowly as their bodies decay,

They struggle for survival with each passing day,
And yet we can feed a starving world with the food we throw away,
What the hell are we doing, we should be donating to them, trying to help them live,
Why aren't most of us making an effort, isn't the highest virtue to love and give?

We are slowly losing our humanity, we are living in an era of sin,
Some ignore their virtues, many judge the colour of one's skin,
There are children out there suffering from Kwashiorkor,
We have to be the ones to help them live to unlock life's amazing door,

Edema, irritability, anorexia, ulcerating and dermatoses are some of the problems they bare,
Enlarged liver with fatty infiltrates, helping them through this is a task all of us should share,
We need to make room in ourselves to show them kindness and compassion,
Even if we do a little, every life saved can make a difference to their nation,

Scarcity of food in a country that brings its people to this state,
Which is why we should help, dying of hunger is no man's fate,
Not in this atomic era when we have machines on mars and have cured HIV,
We must help each other, build a better tomorrow for all man to see,

We must embrace the principles of humanity, we can give these lives a new start,
we should open our eyes to these problems, We have to make room in every single heart,
For if all of us are truly committed to an effort together,
We can easily stop the sufferings of world hunger forever.
