Xyris And O. Speciosa Poem by Jacqui Thewless

Xyris And O. Speciosa

For every time
and place, the right
encouragement.

A bog has small Xyris flowers,
budding on thin blades in the morning hours,
spreading yellow petals in the soggy afternoon;

the ordinary wayside’s
O. speciosa is perfumed
and open by both day and night,

lives without water if it has to;
closing its showy primrose only when
the sun first rises.
