You Are Proud Of Your Country Poem by Francis Duggan

You Are Proud Of Your Country

You say you are proud of your Country of you what does this say
That you are Nationalistic it does seem this way
And from Nationalism wars often begin
Where even the winners never seem to win.

Proud of your Country and your Country's flag
Suppose we do need something of which to brag
You are one of those who believe in the lie
That only true heroes for their Country die.

Proud of your Country you are not one of the few
In saying so much you are not saying anything new
Millions who were proud of their Country in wars have died
Their price huge to pay for patriotic pride.

I am proud of my Country that is your proud boast
And to pride of your Country you often drink a toast
But you do not like your neighbours the family next door
Because they were born on a foreign shore.

You are proud of your Country at least you say so
Though such pride into mistrust of others can grow
And you may even die for your Country one day
From your old Hometown many miles away.
