Good Man Poem by Rusty Ed Gibson

Good Man

There's a good man in the ground
beneath my name upon that stone
He gave me everything he knew
and everything he owned
There is more of us the same
than I had ever thought
but there is no way I'll ever bring
as much heart as what he brought
There's a good man in the ground
beneath my name upon this rock

I came here to say goodbye
and to tell him what I thought
I came to thank him kindly
for all the things he taught
I wish that he were here
but at the same time I am glad he's not
There's a good man in the ground
beneath my name upon this rock

He might not like the way his granddaughter
is a mom all alone
He may not like the direction
this country has started to go
He may not like the way that I
drink to him so
Cause there's a good man in the ground
beneath my name upon that stone.

I think he would be proud of this boy
that she is trying to raise
and how his great grandson
bears his same name
I think he would be happy for all of us
and how we carry on
He was the one that towed this very line
before we came along

There is a good man in the ground
beneath my name upon that rock.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Beautiful poem. I'm sorry about the loss of your father. I always felt that I was a watered down version of my father. I could never be as good, loving and selfless, as my father was in life. Though it gives me a high standard to try to attain. We are both fortunate to have been raised by such good men. Thanks so much for your lovely poem. As with all your poems, it is wonderfully written, and straight from the heart. It is a wonderful tribute to your dad.
