Once friends we've grown apart the past has gone
But like 'tis said of life that life goes on
They have forged new friendships that does suit me fine
Their interests are so different to mine

Their protests loggers and sawmillers don't please
But to those noble souls who fight to save the trees
One well might say respect is overdue
On Nature's behalf such great work they do

Though little strange in that most migrants would say
I often do think of old friends far away
More than twenty years since I've seen them and time ticking on
And my prime years of life to the ways of time gone.

Goodbye to friends and family is never easy to say
To those you may not see again for many a day
You are bound for a place that is far away
Your mood matches the weather the sky is gloomy gray,

Dear friends of the past a good friendship we've known
But apart from each other 'twould seem we have grown
We shared much in common but not any more
Since a different future for us was in store.

If the radiator is boiling and you've got a sick car
And the sun blazes so hot it boils the roadway tar
And you are stuck by the highway and from home you are far
It's in moments like these you know who your friends are.

Though some of them retain a place in the heart
From friends of the past we tend to grow apart
They have formed new friendships and new bonds like you
Though to some of our friends of the past we remain ever true

For them I do still have a place in my heart
But from my friends of the past I have grown apart
The most of them I have not seen for sometime
Like me they are many years past their life's prime

My friends back in my prime years I never did disown
It's just that I live far from them and apart we have grown
We drank and played football together but our separate ways we've gone
And we have forged new friendships and life of course goes on.

In life i have made a few friends and i have made a few foes
The same goes for many one would have to suppose
only a saint could go through life without making one enemy
At least anyway this is how it seems to me

Worldwide for this thing known as success people do compete
And everyday for many a new challenge to meet
The praises of the wealthy and famous the masses may sing
But success as is said can be a relative thing

If you have many friends you too have some foes

My friends of the past over there i have not seen for some while
And between us in distance there is many a mile
And though them i have not seen for decades of years
For what used to be i have shed all of my tears

I used to have friends when i lived in Millstreet
But nowadays mostly strangers there i'd only meet
Since i last lived there 'tis going on twenty five years
For my first home-place in Duhallow i have shed all of my tears

When he was was wealthy with lots of money to spend
He was one who was never short of a friend
But now he is poorer and his friends are quite few
Money wins more friends for you that's not saying anything new

You own a big home and an expensive car
And to find one quite as wealthy one would need to travel far
Your wife and son and daughter own brand new mercedes as some like to say
Money speaks every language it does seem that way

I do not talk to my Aussie friends of a place that means much to me
That in my flights of fancy i often do see
That beautiful part of my Homeland Ireland
Since the true depths of nostalgia they may not understand

Some of them like i did went to live elsewhere

And as you become financially wealthier your friends in numbers do grow

Of friends our Earth Mother does need more us humans take from her and in return to her little give
Though she is the one who does feed us off of the food she grows for us we do live
Yet some of our kind very greedy and only know of how to receive
What we do to the Earth that does feed us we do to ourselves i believe

Do good old memories ever bring you close to tears
As your thoughts take you way back to the long gone years
On nice Summer evening until the gloaming after sundown
You played football with your young friends in the park of the town

Good friends of your past you may not see again
But fond memories of them today you retain
Though today you may not recognize them if them you did see
Since you visualize them as they used to be

In our younger years we were best friends going back five decades or so
But time with it does bring changes and this was a long time ago
Today we are friends but not best friends apart in our ways we did grow
We have changed in our ways and interests and our friendship has waned this i know

Perhaps it is their idea of a Winter holiday
In Illowa in Winter for a few months for to stay
Around the herds of cattle they spend their days
Eating insects disturbed by the big beasts as they graze

The one with many friends is one not without foes
This is how humanity works one does have to suppose
There is no shortage of critics in any town
For to drag the wealthy and popular down

Due to Climate Change and destruction of natural habitat by the greedy environmentally unaware
Many species of wildlife are becoming quite rare
Far too many only interested in the promotion of their own welfare
To realize that Planet Earth is only for us to live in and with other creatures to share

It does not seem possible so why even pretend
That everyone that you know to you is a friend
Since acquaintances are many and friends are few
And this in itself is not anything new

Everyone does need friends this well may be so
But your best friend of today may be your future foe
On the length of friendship as in love and in life there is no guarantee
Since far into the years ahead we cannot see

Though many will tell you that it isn't so
'Tis far harder to make a good friend than a foe

I might feel a stranger in Millstreet today.

Of people and of Nature and of the wild and free
But my rhymes are just not good enough or so 'twould seem to me.

My dearest friends gone from my life forever and in a green and quiet place they lay
And though by many they are now forgotten I fancy I can see them every day
I see them working in the sunlit meadow with two pronged pikes they toss the hay to dry
And wild born bees are busy gathering nectar from the wildflowers and blossoms of July.

Where are my friends my friends not here today
And I need them now where are they anyway?
I once had friends on every street in town
But now I've none and none know me since I'm down.

Dear friends and good people we may never more see
But they remain with us in our memory
In our thoughts they remain young as the friends we did know
