‘A Physician makes a perfect poet, ' why?
-He sees the human being in more ways
Than other professionals throughout his life:
In times of suffering, joy, ecstasy, pain;
From womb to tomb, in throes of death, dying.
In coma, Id, super-ego, ego;
And when one regains life by miracle;
In anger, anguish, depression and guilt;
In hate and vengeance, cancer-stricken late;
In sleeplessness, despair, hysterical,
In every age, sex, walk of life on earth.
A doctor makes a perfect poet - true;
His art of observation, inference,
Inquiry, patience, imagination,
Render him way ahead of most people.
But poetry comes by inspiration best!
Poets are born and moulded through sheer toil;
The art of listening, empathy, ethics,
Makes doctor's mind and heart utmost ideal
For poesy - word-painting - a God's gift!

Interesting point of view. Can't entirely agree with it though. Have had too many doctors who didn't observe, inquire, have patience or imagination. They seemed to have tunnel vision. One in particular, thought he was God, wouldn't listen to me - because of him I had to have several emergency surgeries, was in a coma, on life support - major infections - my good doctors didn't think I would make it. Almost didn't. So many of the doctors don't know anything about a patient, don't listen to them and make many mistakes in judgment and care. So in all honesty, I can't say that a doctor makes a perfect poet. Only a few do. A poet has innate talent, a perfect gift from God, no matter his/her profession or educational background. Must say that you are one of the few doctors that does write well, however. Thank you for sharing, RoseAnn
