Against The Country's Best Poem by Francis Duggan

Against The Country's Best

Rating: 5.0

Against the Country's best in his prime with success he did compete
And he remains arguably as the town's greatest ever athlete
Quite graceful in winning as well as in defeat
At his best he was always the one for to beat
But time as is said leaves the best walking slow
And on him like all others the years they did show
I used to see him walking in the park with his aged wife
The mother of his children and his soulmate in life
A charming old couple free of any conceit
Who greeted with a smile everyone they did meet
But sadly for her she is now on her own
With only the memories of the love she had known
With the man that she married who in his grave lay
The famous athlete who was buried today.
