Amber Eyes Poem by Juan Olivarez

Amber Eyes

Ive often wondered
In my own peculiar way
What it is about your eyes that I love so
Is it their amber color
that color of a translucent resin
From coniferous trees of a bygone age
Or is it the Fire stoked result
Of sand heated to incredible temperatures
That mirrors my face back to me
Or maybe its only the humanity in them
The pain, the sorrow, the joy the tears,
Or simply oh so many years
I have inadvertently rhymed a passage
But the fact of the matter is this
And I always return to this
The reason is
That they smile
For me alone
Your amber eyes
