As The Lifeguards Bury A Seal At Sunset Beach

As the Lifeguards Bury a Seal at Sunset Beach

When I breathed in your ear, a child sprung forth.
When I smiled at your errors, another one awoke.
“Be free like you always wanted to be, ” I screamed.
And you said, “Don’t tell me what to do.”
“To do? To do? Do something, anything. Just do.”
“That’s just like you, ” you said. “Always right, even when you’re wrong.”

But you can’t blame me anymore.
Now, you are like a dead seal on the beach,
your shiny, white spine
shows the emptiness of your guts.

But the stink stays for a long time.
