Banners Poem by Eli Spivakovsky

Banners

I walked there from my Hotel.
There they were in Jaffa St.
*** A Pavilion filled with banners ***
There was a light breeze and I watched them in their white universe
I watched them in their blue and white dimension
I watched them unfold themselves
I watched them ripple
release gold dust
these layers of heaven
I imagined them stacked together
Sleeping inside one of them
Dreaming the National Anthem
I watched them grow.
They stretched themselves out
Became the train to a million brides.
Then retreated back
silk and linen
stitched needlepoint
of an elegant star
I never saw such peace
There, in Jerusalem
hanging from a great height
these effortless emblems,
these resplendent, majestic, splendorous
trails
known as banners.
