Birds Poem by Aparna Chatterjee

Birds

Have you seen the birds
Perched on lamp-posts,
Cars and roof-tops?
Maybe, they are perched
On your heads too; -)
What do they do? !
You've cut off all the trees.
So now, they just have
These inanimate objects
And a lot many dumb heads
To perch and poo; -)

I love them flying in the sky
But I wonder…
When they get tired of flying,
And wish to rest on the
Swaying branches,
They might be wrangling
With each other,
For lack of space
To find the best tree
Or in a couple of years,
Maybe the only tree -
Left to shelter them.

Just as we humans
Squabble with each other
For scraps of land
That are hardly there
To house us
As most of them
Have been taken up
By the skyscrapers
To boost our flagging economy.
