Burgundy Lace Poem by Marquita Lawson

Burgundy Lace

She sings for her meals and some change to get by
Who she is she doesn’t want you to know
So she covers her face with burgundy lace
To hide all her shame don’t you know?

Daycare won’t take a child under two
So she pays 'til it hurts for a sitter to come and go
Welfare won’t let her love even if she wanted to
She’s alone in her pain, don’t you know?

Nights are dark and days are blue
There’s nothing to believe
If it wasn’t for the childrens smiles
She’d only have her grief

They camp in the mountains and sing in the sun
She writes of the joy from above
The saddest thought that she can share is:
There is no one to trust with her love.

1971 - song lyrics - life of a single mother
