Can It Be?

Can it be this tree of life has ceased to be?
The leaves have fallen the core is dead.
The rest of eternity I fear and dread.

Can it be that all is gone?
When the tree of life bloomed bright and strong.
I guess it's dead I guess it's gone.
I guess there's nothing left to be done.

poet Alfred Lord Tennyson

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
