Changing Values And Human Instinct Poem by Venkateswaran Krishnan Sreenivasan

Changing Values And Human Instinct

Feeling hungry, man goes for the junk
And stinks all day like the skunk;
The odor is masked by a fragrant spray
Fumigant sticks keep smells at bay

Starved of water, he slakes his thirst
With cola and carbonated drinks the worst
For bloating with gas, he chews the pill
And sooner or later often falls ill

Walking and running for health are taboos
Life is bitter without a booze
A few work out indoors on a treadmill
But many are sluggards who remain still

Smoking, drinking and doping
Habits acquired by youth for coping
Appear in the beginning soothing
Ultimately make friends loathing

We degrade our nature’s healthy environ
Throwing our waste in gay abandon
Heedless of the sickness to which we’re prone;
But sweetest blossoms our homes adorn

The net has caught our children in its web
Of information, news and knowledge hub
They shy away from thinking, books and strain
And become virtual robots shorn of earthly pain

Science has a remedy for every ill
For insomnia too we have a pill
Ingest before bedtime and to sleep get booked
Pursued for months, you may get hooked

To enhance libido, Viagra is handy
To lift your mood, gulp your brandy
Pledges are in plenty but practice is rare
Every human endeavor goes haywire

Lure of wealth, power and fame
Brings in its wake boundless shame
The hungry man still hunts after the game
Until fear of doomsday makes him tame

Selfish traits in man breed hate and crime
Regardless of place and time
Even inside the homes in our cities prime
And smear the society with shaming slime
