Chaser - Poem by Robert Mahoney

I have not yet come to terms with this
Toss one back and drift in sleeplessness
One more drink, to cover up the pain
That's all this is
That's all it ever will be

Chaser, like a sweet Novocaine, sugarcane
Chaser, another way to numb the pain, go away
Eraser, wash away the bitter taste of memory
Too weak to take it but too far gone to care
Chaser, ch-ch-chaser

I have lost track of how long it's been
Numbed the mind to escape myself again
Suddenly, it catches up with me
Yeah, I know,
I'm so disappointing

Chaser, like a sweet Novocaine, sugarcane
Chaser, another way to numb the pain, go away
Eraser, wash away the bitter taste of memory
Too weak to take it but too far gone to care
Chaser, ch-ch-chaser

I can't sleep lest conscience swallow me
Drain me dry til guilt has emptied me
Chaser....Chaser....like a sweet Novocaine, sugarcane
Chaser....Chaser.... another way to numb the pain, go away

Chaser, like a sweet Novocaine, sugarcane
Chaser, another way to numb the pain, go away
Eraser, wash away the bitter taste of memory
Too weak to take it but too far gone to care
Chaser, ch-ch-chaser
