Checking Out Poem by John Zeller

Checking Out

Carve my name in marble
this name I will never see
add some roses and a skeleton
in memory of me
remember me as a coward
who laid his sword down for a pen
remember me as a lover
who never learned of the love of men
forgive me if I crossed you
for a selfish man I was
I did try my very best though
though my best wasn't good enough
