Doubter And The Doubt Poem by gershon hepner

Doubter And The Doubt

Like Emerson, I am the doubter and the doubt,
not bitter as I hymn a Brahmsian song,
for death’s a requiem we cannot do without,
to say all flesh is grass is hardly wrong.

But though, like Brahms I sing in the vernacular,
with none to hear, as Emerson did Thoreau,
I trust that God, not Brahmin, whom I find spectacular,
will say tomorrow there will be no sorrow.

Inspired by a quotation at the beginning of the prologue of Diane Johnson’s spectacular novel “Le Divorce” (Penguin) and also by the spectacular performance today of The First Miracle Group, traded over the counter as MVEE.OB, since their stock rose 44% on news that they have movies with Brooke Shields and Darryl Hannah in the can:

I am the doubter and the doubt,
And I the hymn the Brahmin sings (Emerson) .
