Expanded Standards Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Expanded Standards

Not too many these days can say,
There is one way to live...
That will achieve a success.
Determined to get to have happiness.

What had been valued,
No longer sets trends.
Those 'just got to have it times',
Seem for some to have come to an end.

Expanded are the standards.
Everything once considered old,
The younger folks,
Have begun to review it as something new.
Adding something different.
To update with technology.
Then to find a way to make it better.

Yet...
Always there are those,
With minds stuck in the past.
Doing the best they can,
To live limits and restrictions.
Believing steady habits to have them,
Creates steps to move forward.
Although remain staying to criticize,
The ones already...
Living in the future.
Without answering questions asked,
What it is they choose to do...
May upset others,
Who neither accept nor approve.

"Have you taken into consideration,
Your nonconformist way of life...
May have and leave an effect,
On what you expect...
The future has for you to offer? "

-Yes.
Yes, I have.
My expectations to live and have them,
Is to know...
People like you,
Will not be around.
To find whatever I choose to do,
None of their business.-

"I could never live like that.
So...
Direct and disrespectful."

-Should I be surprised or shocked?
Which would you prefer I express? -

"How rude.
Appalling and..."

-Honest? -
