Extra Ordinary (C) 1-6-10

Woke up a Monday morning like I regularly do
School brought no satisfaction just the regular affairs among men
No plans for the day I guess it’d just be intriguingly boring
No significant memory but the man takin his kids to the bus
He said hello to me generously and I return the etiquette
But that’s it and now the school day is over
So now I walk down the street Donte standin to my right and I’m goin home
In the distance I see the man from earlier just got his kids off the bus
They started to walk home
I crossed the street because some kids in front of me were throwing snowballs
And I didn’t wanna get hit
So now I’m on the same side as the man and his children
But the ordinary to some became extra to me
The kids across the street began throwing snowballs at them
But what stood out to me was the father’s reaction
No he didn’t yell, or fuss, or rush the children home, he began to build a fort
And stock up on the fluffy ammo and return fire
He blocked his children from bein hit and sacrificed his warmth for his them
His cigarette fell to the ground and a flurry of snowballs rained down upon him
As he returned the snowballs of his own
The children ran past me laughing and smiling the older one ran back to help
Dazed, I past the man as he respectively ceased fire until we left
Now to most such an event lacks significance and shouldn’t be written
Especially in a manner written as deep as free verse
But what I couldn’t help thinkin was,
I didn’t know fathers played with their children
So this isn’t the end the rest comes after because I realized
A poem that is free verse is to sad or sweet to express what I’m about to say

What is ordinary for many, can be really extraordinary for the poet. Appreciation of apprently small things is what makes a poet a poet.
