Also, If you think of fire metaphorically representing the religious and the coming of the lord and the events that are supposedly going to take place. And Ice representing the scientific community, the big bang theory, and the events that are supposedly going to be taking place....
I think he wanted to make a point about the different predictions of the fate of our world by both contrasting parties.

Frost locates fire and ice in his sensory experience.
He parallels both with our emotional states, cojoining inner and outer with the greatest possible simplicity of expression.
