First Love Poem by Richard Phiri

First Love

The picture is still vivid I remember every detail of it
Reminiscing gives me chills, I still experience the same thrill
adrenaline rush through these veins and a bright smile on my face
I was still young
just a boy navigating through these mazes in my heard seeking knowledge but my intellect was still in its infant stage
Life was like an enigma I hoped to understand
Understand how the heart beats fast and how goose bumps form
Or know how the sweat under your armpits develops, way before the mind is even exposed to the word Homeostasis
because I was just in my 9th grade when I first layed my eyes on this beautiful girl and vowed to set camp there
That very moment my heart gave me assurance that there would be no need for a run away cuz I would be crushing on her
I didn't know what love was but what I did know was I felt something for her
something like a like a blow to the abdomen how I became weak every time I stood before her
Something like a virus distorting my speach every time we engaged in a conversation
Conversations that couldn't extend past the exchange of greetings
Hi hello then bye was the normal frequent routine
I never saw myself sparking up a conversation that could last long enough to make her warm and build up chemistry
My mind confused by a mere glimpse of her, she was perfectly shaped, what on earth is this kind of geometry
Left to wonder every time she gracefully walked passed me
She was an angel cladded in mortal skin
Her voice was more soothing than a lullaby to a baby
Soft and warm with a touch that was heavenly
see,
this is the story of my first love but also my heart break
because they all happend at the first time the day she told me sorry we can't date.
