Flower 3 - The Golden Laburnum Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Flower 3 - The Golden Laburnum

Rating: 5.0

Lovely laburnum!
Laced with a silky texture,
Locks that cool the eyes,
Lifting the spirit with rays of sunshine!

Drooping down in lemony bunches
Charming flowers of good luck
Beaming flowers of bright sunshine
Dreaming flowers of gentle love!

Admitting a bright new year,
Auspicious golden laburnum!
Alluring blooms of summer,
Alighting moments of joyful wonder!

Gently led by a hand so trustworthy,
My sleepy morning eyes closed,
My guardian angel leading the way,
My heart full of love and hope!

As I enter the hall of prayer,
A strong aroma envelopes me,
Aroma of sweet scented jasmine,
Appealing incense that caresses me!

Seated before an array of wonderful gifts,
Slowly lifting my eyelids to glamorous objects,
Serene mirror to see your reflective thoughts,
Sights of abundant miraculous powers!

Adorned by flocks of golden blooms,
Adorable ‘Krishna' playing his melodious flute,
Amiable ‘Lakshmi' sprinkled with yellow blooms,
Angelic ‘Sarasvati' tuning her ‘Veena' with lyrical buds!

Every lighted lamp glowing with laburnum,
Every God and Goddess adorned with laburnum,
Every silk, jewel, fruit, flanked by laburnum,
Every valuable coin smiling through laburnum!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
For the Keralites, the laburnum flowers are considered to be auspicious. On the new year day, they are plucked in bunches and placed in the prayer room. An elder member of the family leads the younger ones with their eyes closed and to open their eyes to a beautiful sight of Gods decorated with locks of laburnum flowers amongst other valuable objects as a sign of prosperity and good luck. It is called 'Vishu Kani'. 'Vishu' is the new year festival while 'kani' is the first auspicious sight at dawn.

This summer, it being unusually warm, all the laburnums here burst into bloom. In some trees it was all flowers..... there was not even a leaf to be sighted! Indeed a feast to the eye! You have caught the real spirit and beauty of 'Vishu' and 'vishu kani'! A sure 10

Truly, i find laburnums most enchanting. To see them hanging down in clusters on the trees is a visual delight. Delhi is full of these trees. I see them daily when i go for a walk. Thank you Valsa! Stay blessed!
