Food For Thought Poem by Mark Heathcote

Food For Thought

You're not who you say you are.
But doesn't a dancer dance?
Doesn't a carpenter work with wood?
Doesn't a singer sing?

You're not who you say you are.
But doesn't a midwife deliver babies?
Doesn't a soldier fight?
Doesn't a farmer farm?
Doesn't a painter paint?

You're not who you say you are.
But doesn't a sculptor sculpt?
Doesn't a sailor sail?
Doesn't a hob-carrying bricky build?

You're not who you say you are.
You're-not-a writer or a poet?
But doesn't a writer write?
Doesn't a poet sing love ballads?

'Look, we are what we do.'
How can I be anything else?
And who are you to say I'm not?
I'll leave it there as food for thought.
