Friends Are Lost Poem by Shalom Freedman

Friends Are Lost

Friends are lost
One by one
Few remain

Age may have its consolations
But it has its special bitterness also

Life is diminished
Without friends

Years of memories vanish
The ease of familiar laughter
Is no longer-

We wake by being with others
And being alone too much
Contracts us into ourselves

Friends are lost
The joy of our life is less

Where have they gone?
And what will become of us?
