I saw a young man today
In an outdoor café
Who reminded me of you
And though I knew he wasn’t you
(For you never wore a hat)
He looked so much like you
It made my heart stop
The same smug look
The same strong jaw
Dark hair, dark eyes
I start to see shadows….
I wanted to come closer
To look at him- stare at him
Find out how much more
You look like him
As the past took over the present
And memories flooded my senses…
Then suddenly I realized
He might think it strange
That a woman like me-
A woman my age…
So with one last look
I closed my eyes
And quickly walked away
I've done that! Great poem, kind of sad but thought provoking.....kept me interested all the way through to the very last syllable! Ruthy: -)
A moment most of us (of a certain age) will recognise. Touching and sad in a smiley kind of way.
You have a wonderful insight into life Sonya, this reminds me of when we lose someone close and look for them in a crowd, wishful thinking I suppose, great poem, 10 Lynda xx
The worst is when you see somebody who exactly resembles your relative who has passed on. Because along with the feeling of recognition, comes a sensation of just how much you have lost out of your life..not pleasant at all. And yes, our age causes us to stop often- the fear of looking ridiculous seems to outweigh a lot of other concerns, doesn't it? I have a triple dose of that I think.
Hi Sonya, I love it and can feel it. This has definitely gone into my personal favourites. Thank you
Sometimes we all feel this way when we find a familiar face among the crowd, only to realize later that we were mistaken. Strange, but the same applies to both the ones we love and used to love...
