Halloudi The Greek Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Halloudi The Greek

Out of seas
Halloudi the Greek
Came

Laden with wares
In his cart
Drove he.

‘Out of the seas
From a land by the seas
These be’

So said he
And chanted merrily.

Some of those passing
Stopped
Then saw

Then gathered round
And looked and looked
And picked now this
Now that

Then some – just some
They bought
‘How much? ’

‘Ah! those things priceless be
For they be of the sea
But for you just an euro passes’

‘Euro! ’ they exclaimed
And bought

Of those who bought many
Fell wondering
Spoke words wise but not
As before:
Said their friends
‘Halloudi! Halloudi the Greek! ’

‘Let’s go to him! , ’ and marched
Then in a stairs to a wooden bridge
They found Halloudi curled
Like a sack and he moved not
Touched him they and he
Moved not
Shook him they and he
Moved not
Mourned they:
‘Halloudi! Halloudi the Greek! ’
