Having A Heart Poem by Nicole Delong

Having A Heart

Having a heart
Comes as a gift
As well as a curse.
You'll be a healer,
A saving grace to many.
But, you'll hurt
And become empty.
Giving everything you have,
While recovering none.
Some will be grateful,
Others will be takers,
You'll give until you can no more
And even then,
You'll pour from an empty cup.
Wheres the joy in it?
Sure, they're healed.
Sure, they're happy.
But what about you?
Sure, you helped them.
But, what about you?
Where's the joy,
In feeling empty,
In feeling drained
And overwhelmed.
Where's the joy,
In feeling pain
In feeling used
Feeling like happiness is undeserved.
Always feeling misunderstood
Always feeling alone.
It's the price we pay,
The price of having a heart.
