Hesitation Poem by Samantha Adam

Hesitation

They fought; it would be odd if they didn't.
They argued with one another the way they would never argue with anyone else, and
It was ruthless, it was engaging, it was them.
But this battle wasn't like any other, "tell me you love me! " she commanded.
Denial, objection, unwillingness was what he was made of at that very second.
She was indomitable, and won.
"I…love…you? " more like a question, but to her that was enough.
A simply smile rushed her face, this wasn't what she expected, but it was something.
She had a thing with words, words meant a lot to her; she remembered them, polished them, and kept them.
The enemy of each battle she fought with each day was gone.
It was unexpected, it just happened.
Nobody understood it, not even her.
But one thing that killed her, and it made her feel as gone as her now departed enemy, was the last words he gave her.
The hesitation in the "I love you" that he spoke.

Powerful, I have had a similar experience. Where love was repayed with repeated betrayal
