I Just Knew Poem by Rutvi Padhy

I Just Knew

With you, I knew I could hold my breath. Because you lived right down there, on the ocean floor. And I had to swim back up so many times that I had barely any time left for you. For us. And so, I made my choice. I chose you. Over the blue skies, I chose you. Over the sun, the moon and stars, I chose you. And your depths. Yes, I made my choice. I chose you because I knew it was the right thing to do. Because you were everything to me and so much more. And I couldn't take you with me, to out there, to the world where I lived and breathed. Where you and others like you were but a fancy thing of jewellery. Oh, you were my pearl! So rare. So beautiful! I couldn't do that to you, to reduce you to something so ordinary and unreal.
You deserved so much more.
And I knew. That if you couldn't be a part of my silly, little world (and I didn't want you to be a part of it) , I at least could be a part of yours.
I knew that. I knew I could learn how to breathe. I knew I wouldn't miss the rain, or the wind or everything I ever loved. Because the love I had for you was so much more. I knew that. I knew everything!

I just knew.

Didn't I?
