I Will Write A Poem Poem by Nweke Emmanuel

I Will Write A Poem

Rating: 1.5

It was her 18th birthday
And I told her
I will write her a poem
Describing how beautiful she was
How lovely she acts, and
How caring she behaves
But I never wrote her a poem,
Until it was her 19th birthday
Then I sent her a card
With a poem written beneath
"Born in June" was the theme
And she loved it so much
Caressed the lines with her fingers,
and kissed my lips for the art
But the poem beneath
Was not written by me
And in my heart I said
"One day I will write you a poem"
And you will crown me a poet.

On her 20th birthday I was far away
Then our love had started to wane
Yet, I remembered it was her day
And remembered
I always wanted to write her a poem
I sighed, I grumbled
I missed her much
But my lines had started to change
I picked a pen
and wanted to write her a poem
But the coming thought was of hate
Was of anger, jealousy, loss and pride
The tears, and her words when we fought.
Then I refused to write her a poem
Because I wanted to write her a poem of love
And not of hate
So I phoned her and blessed her day
But my mind was far away
Lost in the lines my thought had made
All is well, I said in grief
And wished we were all we used to be

It passed, and life went on with me
And I was yet to be crowned her poet.

On her 22nd birthday
I saw her with another man
In the mall where I went to shop
I saw her and remembered it was her day
I did not know how it escaped my mind
Yet I remembered
But I refused to wish her well
She seemed happy without us
Yet I saw the longing on her face
Deep within her eyes,
when I crossed her way
"First love never fades"
I remembered the words she used to say
But ours seems to be fading.

Time has taken her sweetness away
And only her memory remains with me
And I see what we used to be
those days,
When I wanted to write her a poem.

in case her memory remains, my dear poet, then her sweetness could not have been taken away by time for time is ever connected with bad or fond memories. A good read.
