Drink the dirty bastards down,
Eliminate the callous,
Snake through the sullied streets
Where the smell of urine
And cheap cologne collide;
A man not looking for a bride,
Picks up a girl beaten down by life
For minutes of pleasure
That slide into the past
Like a blink of the eye.
On the university streets,
The kids all smile with dreams;
But in the real city,
The hookers and the hoodwinks
Exchange drugs and saliva,
Police-taxi rides
To corrupt precincts
Where homeless, delusional preachers
See Jesus Christ crucified
In the unholy night.
Uriah, as you know, poems like this tear out my heart...but you have done this one extremely well...and more hearts need to be torn out over the ills of the world. Raynette
You have such great contrast in your work Uriah. You are able to write of such beauties and then of such evils with more skill than most can hope for. Great poem. Sincerely, Mary
Stark and uncomfortable images brought. You make them sit together without adding any false beauty in your own art. Powerful stuff indeed. A real poem.
