Lesson 4/19 Poem by Ravenna Bell

Lesson 4/19

Thank you for cold water
To stand me up
Coffee brewed strong as whiskey
Distilling spirit into me
Handed in a treasure cup, delicate
Circles of blue notes and flowers
For days like this

Cats curled up or climbing
Wide-eyed staring, guttural
Greeting or silent indifference

Piano craft demonstrated and
Discussed with painstaking patience
Building my knowledge in design and function

Laughter in the learning of technique
One more time to watch and listen
Imitate and internalize

Book talk, authors shared and
Jotted, library fondness exchanged

Black and white photos hidden
Revealing your life work, significant
Beauty outlined clear

Beethoven and Bach played fine
And fierce in your sure hands
Comforting away the shadows
Music dancing its way down
Into the darkness
Driving home the light
