Lightning War Poem by Travis Snell

Lightning War

Hush, now, brother. Keep thy calm.
Sit you down and sing a song
But softly now; you know the tale,
Why for our sister angels wail
Upon her cross in ghostly chorus.
She, too, sang. But all too hoarse
Now, is her voice, for know you that
Which had occurred on that day at
Saint-Quentin where we used to be
With our loved ones and family.
But then one day, the lightning came
Like two sharp “S’s” in the rain.
And thunder claps like rifle fire
And Satan’s spawn which do aspire
To end the free life that did take
Grandfather’s life to so create.
The lightning will refuse to end
Lest maybe Dieu will choose to send
Heroes, vast and brave and bold
With red or white or blue or gold
With fire to match the lightning’s blaze.
I know the Eagle’s Nest they’d raze.
I feel the beaches they would flood.
They’d take a hammer to the guns,
Stop the lightning ‘fore the rain!
I’d join their ranks. Avenge our pain!
I’d smash the lightning with my hand!
SHH! Hush, now. You understand?
In spite of all our hopes and dreams
The lightning marches on and seems
That it may never come to end.
So, till that day we must pretend
While lightning flashes on outside.
How sad it is. You are a Child
And may not know what ever was
Or why. To you, it’s just because
The lightning came. That’s all you know
And blood to you, is just like snow.
It falls and you think nothing of it.
Your weary tale is not to covet,
For lost you on this very morn,
When bone was broke and flesh was torn,
What used to be your stronger leg
To hungry teeth of this Blitzkrieg.
So, rest we now in streets aflame
While you await to hear your name
Called by sister. Won’t be long.
So, hush, now brother. Keep thy calm.
Lay you down and whisper a song.
