Melbourne Poem by R. Ariffin

Melbourne

I met a lady who hated to share
She was lonely outside the Federation square
I saw a man waiting for rebirth
Searching and sniffing along Lonsdale and Elizabeth
I could almost swear I dreamt of a fair maiden
Laughing and dancing into Fitzroy Garden
I shared a meal and it’s no buffet
But I don’t mind when it’s Tiger lily café
I bought back my pride and put it in my pocket
Sworn to come back to Victoria market
I saw seagulls and ravens trying to deliver
A message of hope and peace along the Yarra River
I undressed myself and with no fear whatsoever
And I skipped throughout St. Kilda’s pier
I walked alone and with naked feet
Searching for hope on Lygon Street
I lit my heart for it to burn
For her, between Gertrude and Nicholson
