Middle Aged Dread Poem by Sue Stone

Middle Aged Dread

Rating: 5.0

I never thought, at forty three,
I'd so obsess at staying 'me';
But not the 'me' you see - for sure,
the face I want is twenty four.
Now birds contest in half crazed race,
crows, smirking, skip across my face.

I never thought, at forty three,
that words like 'crepe' would bother me
or lipstain bleeding in fine lines,
round lips once envied as divine.
Worse still - 'dew lap', 'pouches' 'bags';
skin once taut now gently sags.

I never thought, at forty three,
that 'face flash balm' would set me free!
I now excite at words like, 'fine'
'purify', 'smoothens', plumps, 'refines'.
Clothes cease to serve me half as well
as lotions, serums, oils and gel.

I never thought, at forty three,
that 'Creme de la Mer' would be the key.
But this is an expensive game.
To hold back time is now my aim,
with Revlon, Clarins and Clinique
and Esthee Lauder - magnifique!

I never thought at forty three,
this visage would gaze back at me.
I'm dewy eyed - with tears, not pride,
the march of time won't be defied.
I see above the bathroom shelf
my face - my mother, my mirror, myself.

Hi Sue - lovely structured poem with excellent meter and rhyme pattern and a wonderful subject - 'How do we cope with getting older'. I'm 77 by the way but in some respects it's easier for us Men because like good wine we get more full boddied and taste and feel better with age! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! V1 - Well crow lines can enhance beauty especially if they are smile lines. V 2 Again smiling helps because smiling lips are always so so kissable at any age. V 3 I agree Sue its the smootness and texture of the skin that counts - not the clothes you cover them with - I have studied aroma terapy and feeling good and looking god 'in your skin' is a great blessing for all genders. V 4 Money spent and skin care and smelling good (day and night) is always money well invested Sue - you can always buy a new dress but you can't buy new skin. V 5 There is no shame in looking like your Mum - for all my potenetial wives I took a good hard look at my potential Mum in Law - I chose well I have been married for 52 yeras and my lady wife who is 76 does not look a day over 36 - she still has beautiful skill and has always used soap and water and Jurgens Lotion or Johnson's Baby Lotion. I see my grandad when I look in the mirror. Thanks for a lovely poem with lots of humour. Love in poetry - JOHN

I'm a lot past your age but I remember all you convey.I'm just learning to live with my faults.

I really enjoyed the humour - and the truth - in your poem. As for me, I am 63, as you know, and for about 20 years I haven't used moisturiser per se. I have just used whatever body lotion is around (I get it as presents from time to time and I don't use it on my body - couldn't be bothered - and so it lasts for ages) . Over the weekend, I don't bother with make-up at all, and wouldn't bother for work either if I could get away with it. I went to look in the mirror now to see if I have any wrinkles. I don't think I have any real ones yet - but my neck looks as though it could have some fairly soon. There are 'age' dents in my cheeks and a couple of other places on my face, but no actual crows feet or wrinkles. Somehow, people can see I am old - my hair is grey and my face looks old, but I love that. I love everybody's apparent assumption that I am wise, mature, unstressed, at peace with the world. Hee hee! If only they knew! My mother once said to me that my grandmother was a pretty woman for an old lady, and I remember looking at her, and seeing that my mother was right. Then she was in her eighties and had lots of wrinkles. I have never worried about my age except mildly for a few months around the time I got divorced (at 28) , but I think that had more to do with the failed relationship with my husband than anything else. I celebrate my age. Of course, it is easy to do when one has such incredible health as I have - better than anyone else's I have ever met - and I have met a lot of people in 63 years! I also have more energy than most 20 year olds - and where I get it from is a mystery, as I hardly eat or exercise or doing anything I should for my health. I suppose I am just very blessed, but whatever it is, I am very grateful and I celebrate my health and energy too.
