O Kanata Poem by Garth Wesley Oatway

O Kanata

Hey Ma! Don't be sad, for your boy done trekked across the land. From coast to coast I done trekked the grandeur of this land. Why, I have trekked and I have seen the Rocky Mountain peaks and its colour schemes. I done seen the the Great Plains' grain and the harvesters out there on the range. Why yes Ma, I done seen the red island's potato and the five lakes reign. I have seen such natural sights abound before me and the many paths to hike. Why, I have seen the wonders of this vast expanse. So hey Ma, be proud, for your boy done trekked across the land. From the north, east, west, and south I done boxed the compass on this land. Why, I done helped build the boomtowns that define its bounds. I have drilled and I have mined: I've even fished the waters on both sides. I fished the waters in between, down lakes, rivers, and streams. Why yes Ma, I done seen many a woman and man out there on the land. Why, I done helped the weak and weary to be strong. I've even sung along with the humble masses and all together sung the glory songs that echo everlasting. Hey Ma! Don't be sad for your boy done become a proud Canadian man who's coming home from his trek across the land.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this in a time in my life when I first came home from working in Alberta. It was around that time I that I first learned of the folk singer/human rights activist Woody Guthrie. It was around this time that I started to believe in myself and my ideas and ideals.
