Once Thought To Believe Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Once Thought To Believe

I had once thought to believe,
Only children made excuses.
For breaking windows.
And vandalizing buildings.
Stealing candy from stores.
As children then would do.
Done to blame on other kids,
They often bullied too!
In school and playgrounds.
While munching,
On whatever it was stolen.

I once thought to believe,
People who grew up...
To become adults.
Put away that childish stuff.
And naturally accepted,
Responsibility for their actions.
And not excuse what they did,
To the place blame on others.
Others nowhere around.
Or found to have been near,
Crimes accused...
To have committed them.
Yet...
Held responsible.
With this to do using lies to tell.
Told to sell and bought,
By the ones already to know...
Who among them,
Making accusations.
To be habitual liars.
Since childhood to dismiss,
This mental sickness to ignore!

I once thought to believe,
Kids eventually grow up.
Becoming adults.
To then take positions,
Of responsibility.
With credibility and integrity,
Intact.
Undeniably to have this...
Without it questioned.
Or investigated.
By those seeking evidence.
And not from liars,
Making up their own facts!

I never thought of that.
Then!
But today?
Even common sense to have.
And use...
Undergoes hours of scrutiny!
